How to Upload, Update or Delete a Template
Learn how to upload, update or delete a template in Smarter Drafter Pro.
Once you've finished building your Word template in the Smarter Drafter Add-In, you need to upload it so your team can generate documents. This article walks you through uploading a new template, updating an existing one, or deleting a template that’s no longer needed.
Instructions
Upload a New Template
- Open your document in Microsoft Word with the Smarter Drafter Word Add-In enabled.
- Make sure the document is linked to the correct form.
- Click the Waffle menu (⋮) in the Add-In.
- Select Upload Template.
- Confirm the upload when prompted.
NOTE: Once uploaded, your template will be available for use via the linked form.
Update an Existing Template
- Make your changes in Word (e.g. insert new fields, adjust formatting).
- Open the same document in Word with the Add-In.
- Ensure it's linked to the same form.
- Click Options menu > Upload Template again.
- The platform will detect it’s an existing template and update it.
NOTE: Users accessing the form will now generate documents from the updated version.
Delete a Template
- Go to the form in Smarter Drafter.
- Navigate to the Templates tab.
- Find the template you wish to remove.
- Click the trash icon next to it.
- Confirm the deletion.

Tips for Use
- Always test your template with sample data before uploading.
- Use descriptive filenames to avoid confusion, especially if your form supports multiple templates.
- If you're not seeing the new version after an update, clear your browser cache or refresh the form page.
Common Issues & Solutions
- Issue: Upload button is disabled in the Add-In.
- Solution: Make sure the document is linked to a form. You can’t upload a standalone document.
- Issue: Wrong template was uploaded.
- Solution: Update the correct version by re-uploading from Word.
