How to Update or Refresh the Linked Form in the Word Add-In

Learn how to update or refresh the linked form in the Word Add-in in Smarter Drafter Pro.

If you’ve linked your template to the wrong form or made changes to the form (like adding new fields or rules), you can update or refresh the connection using the Word Add-In. This guide shows you how to switch forms or sync the latest updates.

Instructions

Change the Linked Form

If you've linked to the wrong form and need to switch:

  1. Open your document with the Smarter Drafter Word Add-In enabled.
  2. Click the Options menu in the top-right corner of the Add-In.
  3. Select Change Form.
  4. The current form will be cleared, and the Forms dropdown will reopen.
  5. Search for and select the correct form.

TIP: Once selected, your template will now pull fields and rules from the new form.

Refresh the Form Data After Making Changes

If you've edited the form (e.g. added a field or rule) while working on the template:

  1. Click the Options menu in the Word Add-In.
  2. Select Refresh Form.
  3. The Add-In will reload the latest fields, rules, and structure from the form.

NOTE: This ensures your template is in sync with the most recent version of the form.

Tips for Use

  • You can safely change the linked form before inserting any fields. If you’ve already started building, double-check that existing content controls match the new form’s fields.
  • Refresh regularly when working between the form and the template to avoid using outdated field structures.

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Issue: I refreshed the form but still don’t see new fields.
  • Solution: Save your changes in the form and then return to Word and click Refresh Form in the Options menu.
  • Issue: Changing the form removed my field list.
  • Solution: This is expected. When you switch forms, all previous references are cleared so you can start fresh with the new form's structure.
