Before uploading your template, it’s important to check that all fields in your form are being used and that there are no broken links. The Testing Tab in the Word Add-In helps you identify missing fields, unused fields, and duplicate insertions.
Instructions
Open the Testing Tab
- Open your document in Microsoft Word with the Smarter Drafter Word Add-In active.
- Make sure the document is linked to a form.
- In the Add-In panel, click the Testing tab.
Run the Field Test
- Click Run Field Test.
- The Add-In will scan the template and compare it to the form.
- It will display results in three categories:

- Missing Fields: Fields in the template that no longer exist in the form.
- Unused Fields: Fields in the form that aren’t used in the template.
- Duplicate Fields: Fields used more than once.
Review and Resolve Issues
- Missing Fields: Check whether the field was deleted or renamed in the form. If it’s no longer needed, remove it from the template.
- Unused Fields: If any fields should be in the document, insert them using the Forms tab.

Duplicate Fields: Duplicates are allowed. Review to ensure they're intentional (e.g. name appearing in multiple spots).
TIP: The Testing tab does not check conditional rules, repeating ranges, or field formatting—it only checks basic field usage.
Tips for Use
- Run a field test each time you make significant changes to either the form or the template.
- Unused fields may be acceptable, especially if they’re only used in conditional content blocks or snippets.
Common Issues & Solutions
- Issue: The field test shows a missing field I know exists.
- Solution: Click Refresh Form in the Waffle menu to sync any recent changes.
- Issue: Too many unused fields.
- Solution: Review your form to see if any sections or fields are no longer needed.
