How to Prepare and Link a Template for Automation
Learn how to prepare and link a template for automation in Smarter Drafter Pro.
Before you can automate a Word document in Smarter Drafter, you need to prepare it correctly and link it to a form. This guide outlines the essential setup steps and how to establish the link between your precedent and form using the Word Add-In.
Instructions
1. Prepare Your Document- Ensure the source document is in .docx format. If it's a PDF or another file type, convert it to Word.
- Review the document and familiarise yourself with:
- Variables (e.g. names, dates, addresses)
- Conditional content (e.g. optional paragraphs, role-based wording)
- Save the document to your local system or designated folder.
TIP: You can markup the document with comments or highlights to plan your automation before starting.
2. Set Up Microsoft Word for Automation
Before you open the Word Add-In, check the following:
- ✅ Developer Tab is enabled
- ✅ Design Mode is turned on
- ✅ Paragraph marks are visible
These settings help you see the structure of your content controls and ensure reliable formatting.
3. Link the Template to a Form
- Open your document in Word with the Smarter Drafter Word Add-In installed.
- In the Add-In’s side panel, go to the Forms tab.
- Click the Forms dropdown to view available forms.
- Start typing the form name or scroll to find it, then click to select.
TIP: Once selected, the document is now linked to that form. The Add-In will refresh and display the available fields, conditional rules, and other automation tools.
Tips for Use
- If the wrong form is selected, don’t worry—you can change it later using the Waffle menu.
- You must link a form before you can access field lists, conditional rules, or run tests.
- Always start with a clean, final version of your precedent to avoid rework later.
