How to Insert Conditional and Repeating Content Using Conditional Rules

Learn how to insert conditional and repeating content using conditional rules in Smarter Drafter Pro.

Conditional Rules allow you to dynamically control how content appears in your final document. You can use them to show or hide content blocks, repeat content based on list-style answers, or apply logic that responds to user input. This guide shows you how to insert and configure Conditional Rules in your Word template using the Smarter Drafter Add-In.

Instructions

Understand Conditional Rules

  • A Conditional Rule defines when a section of content should appear in the final document.
  • These rules can:
    • Show or hide content blocks based on specific field values.
    • Repeat a section for every row of data (e.g. multiple parties, multiple properties).
  • They’re created and managed directly in the Word Add-In.

Insert a Conditional Rule in the Word Template

  1. Open your document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Launch the Smarter Drafter Word Add-In.
  3. Navigate to the Rules tab in the Add-In sidebar.
  4. Click Add Conditional Rule.
  5. Give your rule a clear name (e.g. “Show Guarantor Section” or “Repeat Properties”).
  6. Define the logic:
    • Choose a field.
    • Select a condition (e.g. “is answered”, “equals”, “greater than”).
    • Enter a value if needed.

Apply the Rule to a Content Block

  1. Place your cursor where the conditional content begins.
  2. Highlight the content to be controlled by the rule (e.g. a paragraph, table, or clause).
  3. With the rule selected in the Add-In, click Add.

NOTE: This wraps the selected content in a dynamic content block controlled by the rule.

Set a Rule to Repeat Content

  1. In the Rules tab, select Add Conditional Rule.
  2. Choose a list-style field (e.g. “Additional Properties”).
  3. Tick the checkbox for Repeat this content.
  4. Insert the rule around the content you want to repeat (e.g. a table row or bullet list).
  5. Smarter Drafter will repeat the block once for each row of data submitted.

Tips for Use

  • Use descriptive names for each rule so they're easy to manage later.
  • You can nest rules, but keep them simple to avoid confusion in complex templates.
  • Test your rule using Preview Form or by reviewing a generated document via a real submission.

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Issue: The content doesn’t appear in the generated document.
  • Solution: Check if the rule’s condition is met in the form submission. If not, the content will be skipped.
  • Issue: Content isn’t repeating for a list.
  • Solution: Make sure your field supports repeating data and the Repeat this content box is checked.
