How to Limit Field Responses Using Min/Max Values or Characters

Learn how to limit field responses using min/max values or characters in Smarter Drafter Pro.

To ensure high-quality data entry, you can apply limits to how much or how little a user can enter in a field. This is helpful for numeric values, text responses, phone numbers, and more. This guide explains how to apply minimum and maximum values or character counts.

Set Minimum and Maximum Values (for Number and Currency Fields)

  1. In the Form Builder, click New Field or click on an existing Number or Currency field to edit its properties.
  2. Scroll to the Min/Max Values section of the Properties tab.
  3. Enter the Minimum Value (e.g., 10000) and/or Maximum Value (e.g., 500000).
  4. Click Save.

NOTE: Example: To ensure a valid salary is entered, you might set a minimum of $10,000.

Set Minimum and Maximum Characters (for Text Fields)

  1. Add or edit the properties for a Text Field or Text Area.
  2. Scroll to the Min/Max Characters section.
  3. Enter the Minimum Characters (e.g., 10) and/or Maximum Characters (e.g., 250).
  4. Click Save.

NOTE: This is useful for requiring detailed answers or restricting overly long responses.

Apply Limits to Phone Numbers

  1. Add or edit a Phone field.
  2. In the Properties tab or the Properties panel, set the Minimum Characters to match expected phone number lengths (e.g., 10).
  3. Click Save.

Tips for Use

  • Set character limits to prevent vague or overly short responses (e.g., “N/A”). Use value limits to prevent errors like extra zeros or accidental negative numbers.
  • For long-form answers, consider guiding the filler with Supporting Text as well.

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Issue: The form filler sees an error message when submitting.
  • Solution: Check if your min/max settings are too strict. Adjust them based on typical answer ranges.
  • Issue: My phone number field allows too few or too many digits.
  • Solution: Use Minimum Characters to enforce consistent formatting.
