How to Insert and Configure Fields in the Word Template

Learn how to insert and configure fields in the Word template in Smarter Drafter Pro.

Once your form is built, you can connect it to a Word template so that answers are automatically inserted into the final document. This guide explains how to insert fields into your Word template and configure their output using the Word add-in.

Instructions

Insert a Field into the Word Template

  1. Open your Word document with the Smarter Drafter Word Add-in enabled.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the answer to appear.
  3. In the Add-in panel, find and select the field you want to insert.
  4. Click ADD.

EXAMPLE: The field will appear in the document using its placeholder syntax (e.g. [[123456789]]).

Adjust Field Output (Optional)

Once the field is inserted, you can modify how it displays:

  1. Select the field in the Word doc.
  2. In the Add-in panel, adjust:
    • Component (e.g. first name only, street only, etc.)
    • Case formatting (e.g. Title Case, UPPERCASE)
    • Repeat settings (for repeatable sections)

EXAMPLE: If inserting an address, you can include just the suburb and postcode rather than the full address

Tips for Use

  • You can insert each field multiple times in the template with different configurations (e.g. full name vs. first name).
  • For repeatable sections, you can insert one field and apply repeat logic to bring in multiple instances.
  • Use clear bookmarks or section headings in your template to help track where fields are inserted.

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Issue: A field appears blank in the document.
  • Solution: Check that the field was answered in the form and inserted correctly. If it’s a conditional field, make sure the logic was triggered.
  • Issue: The wrong part of a name or address is showing.
  • Solution: Select the inserted field in Word and adjust the component in the Add-in to show the desired part.
