How to Apply Date and Time Restrictions in Fields
Learn how to apply date and time restrictions in fields in Smarter Drafter Pro.
Date and time restrictions help ensure that users enter logical, valid values—like a birth date that’s in the past or a due date that’s at least 14 days in the future. This guide shows you how to apply rules such as “on or after,” “on or before,” or set a specific number of days from today.
Instructions
- In the Form Builder, add or edit a Date/Time field.
- Scroll to the Date / Time Limitations section in the field settings.
Option 1: Use “On or After” or “On or Before” Another Field
- Choose either On or After or On or Before from the dropdown.
- Select the reference field (e.g. “Date of Birth” or “Marriage Date”).
EXAMPLE: To ensure the “Separation Date” comes after the “Marriage Date,” select “On or After” and then “Marriage Date”.
Option 2: Set Relative Rules Based on Today’s Date
- Under Units, select:
- Days, Months, or Years
- Before or After
- Enter the number (e.g., “14” for 14 days)
EXAMPLE: To require a due date that’s at least two weeks from today, select:
14 Days After Today
Tips for Use
- Use On or After rules to prevent users from entering premature dates.
- Use On or Before for things like birth dates or contract expiry dates.
- For deadlines, the X days/months from today rule is useful to enforce lead times.
Common Issues & Solutions
- Issue: The date rule doesn’t seem to work.
- Solution: Make sure the reference field appears above the restricted field in the form. Rules can’t reference fields below them.
- Issue: The form allows today’s date when it shouldn’t.
- Solution: Use After Today rather than On or After to enforce a strict future-only rule.
