How to Adjust Field Components and Format Using the Word Add-in
Learn how to use default values and supporting text in fields in Smarter Drafter Pro.
After inserting a field into your Word template, you can fine-tune its appearance using the Smarter Drafter Word Add-in. This includes choosing specific components (like just a first name or suburb), setting formatting rules, and controlling how repeated content appears. This guide walks you through those adjustments.
Instructions
- Open your Word template and click into the field you want to adjust.
- In the Word Add-in panel, the selected field will be highlighted, and its settings will appear.
Select a Specific Component
- For Name fields: choose from first, middle, last, or full name.
- For Address fields: select line 1, line 2, suburb, state, postcode, or full address.
- For Date fields: choose day, month, year, or full date.
EXAMPLE: Want only the client’s first name? Choose Name > First Name in the add-in.
Override Case Formatting
- Under Case, select:
- None (leave as entered)
- UPPERCASE
- lowercase
- Title Case
NOTE: This overrides any case settings applied in the form and applies directly in the document.
Configure Repeated Fields
- If the field is from a repeatable section, click into it.
- In the add-in, select whether you want to:
- Show only the first instance
- Repeat all instances
- Add separator text (e.g., commas or line breaks)
EXAMPLE: You can list multiple children’s names separated by commas by enabling “Repeat each instance” and adding a comma separator.
Tips for Use
- Use component selection to streamline output—no need to show full addresses or names if only part is relevant.
- Adjust case settings in the Word Add-in if the document style guide requires consistency.
- Use separators and repeat settings for lists like beneficiaries, properties, or dependants.
Common Issues & Solutions
- Issue: The wrong field value is showing in the document.
- Solution: Check that the correct component is selected in the Add-in. You may be showing a full name when only a first name is needed.
- Issue: My list of repeated items isn’t formatting properly.
- Solution: Enable “Repeat each instance” in the Add-in and enter a separator like a comma or line break.
