How to Edit a Child Form

Learn how to edit a child form in Smarter Drafter Pro.

Editing a child form allows you to make specific adjustments while maintaining the connection to the parent form. This guide outlines the steps you can take to edit a child form and highlights the limits of changes you can make.

Instructions

1. Open the Child Form

  • Navigate to your Forms section.
  • Find and open the child form you wish to edit. You can identify child forms by the Child Form label next to the form name.

2. Access Form Builder

  • Once the child form is selected, click on Build to open the form builder.

3. Edit Form Elements

  • You can make the following changes to the child form:
    • Change the label of a section.
    • Change the label of a field.
    • Hide entire sections.
    • Set individual fields to be hidden.
    • Modify field settings to be mandatory, optional, or read-only.
    • Set or change default values for fields.
    • Add supporting text to fields or sections.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

If any element of a question has been changed in the child form, that question disconnects from future changes made to that specific question in the parent form. This relates to every question and every type of change.

Changes are not apparent in the child form so when changes are published in the parent form, a builder should check the child form as the updates from the parent form may not have transferred. That may be the required outcome, but it’s important to check where it’s a change that is required in the child form as well.

Before changes are made to a child form, possible impact on logic and conditional rules should be carefully considered and checked.

4. Review Changes

  • Make sure that the changes you make to the child form do not inadvertently disconnect it from the parent form. Once you alter any question or field in the child form, it will no longer receive automatic updates from the parent form for that specific question.

5. Save Your Changes

  • After completing your edits, click Save to apply the changes to the child form.

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Issue: Changes made in the child form are not updating from the parent form.
  • Solution: If you’ve made any changes to a specific field in the child form, it will no longer sync automatically with the parent form. Check the fields you have modified and verify they are correctly linked.
  • Issue: Hidden fields or sections are not appearing when expected.
  • Solution: Make sure the Hide All slide switch on the section banner is set to Off if you want to view all sections.
